This track makes use of my 31edo electric guitar, fretless bass, and a variety of smaller instruments I've collected over time (elephant bell, rattle, mini djembe) as well as sampler instruments and soft synths all tuned to 31 equal divisions of the octave. Some of the leads and chords were played on my new Osmose keyboard, and this is the first track to make use of it. Although it isn't really designed for use with microtonal scales, the per-key pitch bend makes it such a joy to play and offers a lot of interesting options for retuning notes within chords on the fly (which wasn't really used in this track, as I instead fed the midi data into soft synths retuned them to a subset of 31edo internally). I'd like to experiment with using the Osmose to play in dynamic just intonation in future, as I've been able to retune 12edo major chord extensions on the fly to the 7th, 11th and 13th harmonics by ear with a bit of practice (as well as improve the 5th harmonic). Bioluminescent Beat is very tame in comparison with most of my music in terms of xenharmonics, in that it mostly sticks to meantone with a few xenharmonic intervals thrown in for spice. Nonetheless, playing in 31edo is an interesting experience even with no intention of straying into xenharmonic territory, as 7 limit intervals crop up during modulation to different keys or in the use of chords outside of a diatonic scale, and can lead to colourful and unexpected sounds anyway.
