More than 30 years after reunification, singers Campino (Die Toten Hosen) and Marteria discuss East-West sensitivities. They talk about their experiences with Markus Lanz and why a dialogue between East and West is so important. "The world has changed overnight," Campino says, referring to the war in Ukraine. Current events, due to the East-West debate, have also influenced the staging of their recently released songs. For Campino, it was one of the most beautiful historical moments in his life: the fall of the Berlin Wall. However, reunification did not take place on equal terms. It was more like an annexation, Campino notes. One consequence of this was the rise of right-wing groups in East Germany. And then came Rostock-Lichtenhagen. "The biggest nationalist attack since the Second World War," as Marteria describes it, was already looming. It affected him even as a child, for example, when he had to consider which route to take to school. It was an "anarchic" time. Campino was on tour with his band, the "Toten Hosen," at the time. He felt powerless when he saw these images on television. He channeled his protest into his music.
