Britain's Worst Factory Explosion: The Chilwell Disaster of 1918
On the evening of the 1st of July 1918, an explosion tore through a shell-filling factory in Nottinghamshire. One hundred and thirty-four workers on the evening shift never came home. The factory — responsible for more than half of Britain's entire output of high-explosive artillery shells — was back in production the following morning. The inquiry into what happened was classified within five weeks. The public read of sixty feared lost somewhere in the Midlands, and moved on. It was preventable. It changed Britain's approach to industrial accountability — eventually. This documentary traces the making of the factory, the community it drew in, and the conditions its workforce endured under wartime law that made leaving all but impossible. It follows the sequence of decisions that led to the explosion, the investigation that never reached a conclusion, and the century of near-silence that followed. Stay to the end for what finally changed — and what, on that Nottinghamshire site, is only now beginning to change. #BritishHistory #Documentary #ChilwellDisaster #FirstWorldWar #UKHistory
