He has already done his job. The sun is up — barely, just clearing the low hills in the distance, throwing its first long light across the fields in that particular way of early morning sun that makes everything it touches look briefly extraordinary. Whether he had anything to do with it is a matter of some philosophical debate, but he is standing on his fence post with the satisfied posture of a bird who believes firmly in the causal connection and has no interest in entertaining alternative theories. His comb is red against the pale sky. His tail feathers catch the light in iridescent green and black. He is, by any measure, in excellent form this morning. The farm is waking up around him. Two hens move through the grass in the middle distance, going about their morning business with the practical, unhurried focus of creatures that have never wasted a moment worrying about appearances. The farmhouse behind them sits in the good light of early day, its weathered siding going warm in the sunrise, the red door a single note of deliberate color against the grey-white of old painted wood. A grain silo rises beside it, cylindrical and practical, the kind of structure that exists entirely without aesthetic intention and achieves a kind of beauty anyway simply by being exactly what it is and nothing more. The farmyard between the buildings is quiet in the way of farmyards at this specific hour — past the first activity of pre-dawn chores, not yet into the full business of mid-morning. The fence runs along the lane in both directions. Pasture and treeline alternating across the gentle hills, the mist still low in the valleys between the rises, the whole landscape doing that thing it only does in the first half hour after sunrise — glowing slightly, as if the light is coming from within the land rather than from above it. The trees are full and green, the grass is the saturated green of morning before the day has dried it, and the sky above it all is doing the complicated pastel work of an early sky that hasn't decided yet whether it will be entirely clear or allow a few clouds to stay on for the day.
