“The resource is for them” | Dr. Edna Quansah on fisher inclusion in Ghana

Ghanaian fishers are becoming citizen scientists, and it could be the key to saving their collapsing fish stocks before it's too late. Ghana's small-scale fishing communities depend on the sea for their food, income, and way of life. But decades of overfishing have pushed fish populations to the brink of collapse. EJF travelled to Ghana's coast to explore how one solution is transforming the relationship between fishers and the scientists tasked with managing their waters: inclusion. Our film follows fishers trained as citizen scientists during Ghana's annual closed fishing season as they monitor fish populations, gather data, and build trust in a system that has long excluded them. The result? Communities that don't just comply with conservation measures, but understand and champion them.
