Inside Tenerife’s squatting crisis | Unreported World

Unreported World is from the holiday Island of Tenerife, where squatters are taking over homes and hotels, and property owners are turning to hard man evictors to get them out. The Canary Islands are famous for sunshine, sea and 16 million tourists a year. But a deepening housing crisis is turning the Spanish islands into a battleground, as those who claim they can no longer afford soaring rents, are occupying other people’s property instead. Reporter Anja Popp joins a controversial new force known as the Desokupas, private eviction teams employed by property owners. She meets Roberto Pérez, a former convict turned evictions specialist as his group launch raids on buildings occupied by squatters. As police arrests mount and tempers flare, Anja Popp meets hotel owner Margarita, who is battling to reclaim her 92-room family resort, now under the control of criminals. She explains how she is forced to keep paying thousands of euros in bills, or face prosecution herself. Moderate language warning.
