Cultural Cache Online Season 3: “Burning of Manila” by Fernando Amorsolo
Episode 6 is here! In celebration of National History Month, our August episode features a work by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, which depicts what the artist may have witnessed in Manila during World War II. About the artist: Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) was a painter and a National Artist for visual arts. He earned his degree, with honors, as a member of the first graduating class of the UP School of Fine Arts in 1914, and later served as its director, from 1938 to 1952. During his peak years in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, he widely exhibited both in the Philippines and abroad, including New York and Belgium. His works covered a wide range which included portraits, landscapes, and genre. Moreover, he was the first to extensively portray traditional Filipino customs and manners, fiestas, and occupations like fishing, planting, going to market, washing laundry, cooking, and reading. About the speaker: Fernando Amorsolo Lazo is the grandson and co-authenticator of the works of the National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. He is currently the Vice President and Executive Director at Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation, Inc.
