People of Colour in Enlightenment Britain - Tim Moore
A Friends of Kenwood Sunday lecture given by Dr Tim Moore. The European Enlightenment saw an unprecedented amount of globalisation. As the world’s largest naval superpower, Britain had a huge role on the international stage, and its mainland hosted people from an increasingly diverse set of nations and cultures. For Black History Month, this talk looks at the rich presence of the people of colour who called Britain their home during the Enlightenment, from humble servants to decorated princes. It also considers Kenwood House itself and its own historic connections with people of colour. Dr Timothy Moore is a lecturer of English and History at Oxford and a Project Curator for the National Trust. His research specialises in inclusive histories of the 18th and 19th centuries, including histories of people of colour, queer histories, and histories of disability. Introduction music: L'amant anonyme, Ouverture: 1. Allegro presto by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, 1745-1799. End music: Kreutzer Sonata, Violin Sonata No.9 by Beethoven, originally dedicated by him to George Bridgetower, and premiered by Beethoven and Bridgetower in 1803.
