The people living here are mostly from the Rabari tribe. Their occupation is to herd sheep as nomads in the desert. The Rabari tribe is a traditional pastoralist community primarily found in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Kutch. Known for their distinctive dress, migratory lifestyle, and camel and sheep herding, the Rabaris are one of the most visually iconic tribal groups of Western India. Origins and Name: The word "Rabari" means “outsider” in some local dialects. Believed to have migrated from Sindh (now in Pakistan) or Iran, centuries ago. They follow a mix of Hinduism with strong folk deities and spiritual traditions. Geographical Presence Rajasthan: Especially in Barmer, Jaisalmer, Pali, and Jodhpur districts. Gujarat: Especially Kutch, Bhuj, Surendranagar. Women: Wear black woolen headscarves, ankle-length skirts, and backless blouses. Known for heavy silver jewelry, nose rings, arm bangles, and embroidered garments. Skilled in embroidery, mirror work, and tattoo art. Men: Wear white dhotis, turbans, and sometimes carry wooden staffs. Often herd camels, goats, and sheep. Occupation and Livelihood: Traditionally pastoral nomads, raising camels, cattle, goats, and sheep. Many are also involved in dairy farming, trading animal products, and crafts. Some now settle seasonally in villages but maintain semi-nomadic traditions. Religion and Beliefs: Devotees of Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, and local deities like Vankal Mata or Hinglaj Mata. Many also worship ancestors and spirits. Some Rabari women take vows of spiritual celibacy after widowhood and become spiritual leaders (called bhopa or bhopi). Culture & Art Famous for intricate embroidery (Rabari embroidery). Their work is used in wall hangings, bags, quilts, and clothing. Each subgroup has its own embroidery motifs, color usage, and technique. Rabari Subgrops: There are several subgroups, often based on region: Desai Rabari (Gujarat) Kachhi Rabari (Kutch) Maru Rabari (Marwar region, Rajasthan) Vagadia Rabari Modern Challenges: Faced displacement due to desertification, urbanization, and restricted grazing rights. Some have settled permanently and taken up farming or urban jobs. Still, many strive to preserve their traditions and identity. Known for agriculture via canal irrigation. 2. Pugal Desert terrain; near Indo–Pak fencing. 3. Gharsana (Sri Ganganagar border nearby) Sri Ganganagar District: 1.
