English subtitles correction: at 7:33 "Mouse" should be "Mouth" The Makers" is a series of short videos I made for Yu Jie and Best Friends Studio / Bottega degli Amici, during my European tour in May 2022, recording conversations with seven makers. Each episode was filmed for a few hours, or nearly a month, depending on the context and time of the conversation. The voices of contemporary violin makers are not as powerful as those of antique violins, which can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The lack of publicity and hype from the big capitalists makes them seem ordinary. Yet the classical masters of 400 years ago, like every contemporary luthier today, are struggling to find their place. What contemporary luthiers lack is not a story, but a narrator.
