Tomb of Budhuu (Buddhu’s Tomb), Lahore The 17th-century Tomb of Budhuu*, also called Buddhu ka Awa or Buddhu’s Kiln_, is a striking Mughal-era monument on the Grand Trunk Road in Lahore, Built around *1641 CE during Shah Jahan’s reign, the tomb’s origins are steeped in legend. Local tradition says it belongs to _Buddhu_, son of _Suddhu_, a wealthy brick-maker whose kiln supplied bricks for Lahore’s royal buildings. A popular tale recounts that Budhu insulted a saint at his kiln and was cursed — his bricks wouldn’t bake — until he repented and built this tomb in atonement. However, historical records suggest the tomb was actually commissioned for the wife of *Khan-e-Dauran Bahadur Nusrat Jang*, a Mughal noble, who was himself buried here after his death in 1643. Some Sikh traditions also revere the site as *Gurdwara Bhai Budhu Da Awa*, linked to a devotee of Guru Arjan Dev. Architecturally, the brick structure features a low-pitched dome on a high cylindrical drum, with blue, yellow, and white glazed tile-work in floral and zigzag patterns. Once set in a Mughal garden that no longer survives, the tomb was later used by Prince Sher Singh as army headquarters during his invasion of Lahore. Today, though weathered and surrounded by urban sprawl, _Budhu ka Awa remains a layered symbol of Lahore’s shared Mughal, Sufi, and Sikh heritage — a forgotten kiln that shaped the city’s history, both in brick and in memory.
