Testing For Dutch Pour Paint Consistency
Have you ever wondered how to get your paint to the right consistency for a Dutch pour? Here I show you what the paint should look/feel like, as well as giving you two tests to make sure your paints will “play nicely” with each other in the painting. This recipe works great with craft paint, so be sure to use it if you don’t want to buy expensive tube paints! I mix everything 1:2-3 paint to floetrol, meaning that for every ounce of paint I use, I add 2-3 ounces of floetrol, depending on the thickness of the paint. Then I thin with water until it reaches the consistency shown in the video. For a drip test: Place a drop of each color on a piece of paper side by side. The size of the drop isn’t super important but they all need to be exactly the same size / amount of paint so they will behave the same! Then stand the paper up and let it flow for a few minutes. If a color runs way more than the others, you might want to add a bit more paint to it. If a color doesn’t flow as well as the others, add a bit of water. For the puddle test: Put a small amount of base paint on the paper and add a drop of each color. Let it sit for a few minutes, then check to see if any of your colors are developing a cloudy ring around them. A cloudy ring indicates that the water content may be higher, which could make your painting not look the way you want it. Add more paint if necessary. Good luck making your Dutch pours!
