This time, we'll be walking around Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture. While located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Koga City is sandwiched between Saitama and Tochigi prefectures, and is located to the west. Even the prefectural capital, Mito, is quite far away! Because it's located on the Tohoku Main Line rather than the Joban Line, it's culturally closer to Tochigi and Saitama. Thanks to this, Koga Station is the first train station built in Ibaraki Prefecture. When Ashikaga Ujimi moved from Kamakura to Koga and became the Koga kubo, the town developed as a castle town from the Muromachi period. During the Edo period, it was a post town on the Nikko Kaido road. Industrialization, including silk reeling, progressed in modern times, and the city is now home to numerous large industrial parks and a population of just under 140,000.
