I visit lively, lovely Split on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast

Split on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast is lovely, lively and full of historic charm. I’ve arrived on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast at Split, a gorgeous city with a historic quarter framed by the Adriatic Sea and spectacular mountains. People the world over (lots of them) come here for different reasons. For beachgoers and island hoppers it’s a jumping off point; for cruise ship passengers, it’s an unforgettable port-of-call. But regardless of how one arrives, Split offers the rare combination of dramatic scenery and architectural charm of the kind one might expect of a well-preserved city founded by Greek colonists two centuries before Christ. Of course, the Romans soon claimed it as their own. That’s why a section of the old quarter constitutes what remains of Roman Emperor Diocletian’s retirement palace, completed in 305 CE. (He grew up a few miles away when Split was part of the Roman Empire.) I’ve come here (by bus) from Zagreb, a 5-hour trip through green hills, steeple-covered towns, and, as you near the coast, dramatic rocky escarpments. It's a lovely trip and an even lovelier destination.
