How I Deal with Growling at Me Over RAW Food - Pack Feeding

In this video I show how I deal with any growling from my dogs when I handle them while they are eating RAW food. 02:25 in the video you see me approach Ka-Bar and Puukko while they are eating next to each other to pet and handle them. I put them in these situations to desensitize these young pups to human touch while eating. As I come in to touch 8 month old Puukko from behind with Ka-Bar still right next to us he growls and tries to escape into the dog house with his Food. Instead of reinforcing this behavior you see my calmly without any aggressive words or physical actions grab him by the collar and prevent him from escaping into the dog house while petting him. I then pull him away from the dog house opening and his food and move his Food to him with my foot showing him it's not his food I want while continuing to pet and calm him down. After seeing this he goes back to calmly eating. Dogs are much smarter than people give then credit for being. This is precisely why we do this. The way you train your dogs to handle high stress situation is putting them into them under supervision and then guiding them to the resolution you want. The worst thing I could have done in this situation, especially with a Shepherd breed is to yell at or physically reprimand him. It would have only made him more reactive in future situations like that. Now he sees I didn't want the food at all (as demonstrated later in the video). He also sees I am much stronger than him and can stop him from eating without having to steal the food away from him. I don't need to prove to him I am dominant by taking his food. They already see me as the provider of it and know I am the pack leader. In my videos what you see is happens. There are no jump cuts. I and the older dogs are teaching the younger dogs what is a acceptable behavior when eating in a group setting. This behavior transfer over to how they interact with dogs, especially aggressive dogs on our hikes and teaches them good coping skills for these situations.
