By placing speakers into a baffle wall and treating that baffle wall the sound of a system can be enhanced by minimizing off the wall reflections. SBIR is reduced and diffraction effects are minimized. In addition, baffle walls give you 6dB of free output through boundary reinforcement which can often be used in the speakers design and response shaping to increase sensitivity, output, or extend the bass. My own baffle wall was constructed with a multi-layer absorption system that is designed to reduce the chance if reflections by increasing the shift in acoustic impedance gradually as you approach the wall surface.
