All Aboard! Jamaica's School Train Program Breathes Life into Railway Revival

Some time ago, the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC) entered into a partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Mining, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), and the Ministry of Education to transport students from Old Harbour and Linstead to Spanish Town by rail. In this school train programme, students, teachers, parents, healthcare workers, and other essential personnel were prioritised for the service initially. The Transport Minister at the time, Robert Montague, stated that under the agreement, the JUTC would pick up the students at the Spanish Town Railway Station and drop them off at various schools in Spanish Town, and the reverse would take place in the afternoon. In this test run from Spanish Town to Linstead, representatives from schools and various ministries turned out in numbers to participate in this buzzing revival of the passenger train experience, which had been inactive for years. It was clear that many people were taking the Jamaican train for the first time and did not know what to expect, while seasoned campaigners who knew this route well also joined in.
