We don’t know what the other feels, thinks, what hurts them, or what they long for in this country. But on this night, everyone connected. Drivers were honking, leaning out of their windows, high-fiving people running up from the sidewalks, waving back at them. Civilians were hugging police officers. In an instant, it became clear how many of us wanted the same thing: freedom, liberation, and the end of the power that had been weighing on us. Young people under 18 posted with frustration and helplessness, wishing they could take part but knowing they couldn’t yet. One by one, we reassured them: we placed our votes for them too.
