Entdecke Memmingen: Die versteckte Perle Bayerns
In this video I show Memmingen and its best sights, a beautiful town in the Allgäu. Welcome to a new episode of “At home & on the road”. #memmingen #allgäu #hexenturm Episode: 221 Idea and implementation: Markus Köbler 00:00 Intro 00:10 Market Square 01:30 City Stream 02:30 Old Town 03:18 Witch Tower 03:45 St. Martin We are in the far west of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg is only separated by the river Iller, which flows past Memmingen here. The origins of this town go back to the Romans. Here we see the central square of the old town, which with its many squares, town houses and palaces is one of the best preserved towns in southern Germany. The medieval market square in particular, with its town hall, the grand guild and the tax house, is a defining feature of Memmingen's townscape. The bright, white town hall is at the back of the market square. Directly behind it are the oldest parts of the town fortifications. The front of the town hall has three entrances, a large gate flanked by two smaller entrance doors. This made it possible for carts to drive directly into the large hall. The numerous windows on the front are framed with stucco decorations. In the immediate vicinity of the town hall is the reddish-white building of the grand guild. This house belonged to the patricians, who formed their own guild. They brought enormous wealth to the town and were the most powerful guild in the town, and they made up the majority in the small town council. This meant that they determined the town's politics, culture and economy. A special feature of Memmingen is the town stream, the Memminger Ach. It is a 36-kilometer-long tributary of the Iller, which flows in a canal through the middle of Memmingen's old town, making it one of Memmingen's most important landmarks. Here we can see the Untere Bachgasse. As early as the 16th century, it was said that a stream of pure well water flowed through Memmingen. When the Ach left the city again, this could certainly no longer be said, because at that time the river was used a lot for waste disposal. This canal was created when the city was founded. Even then, it had been possible to channel the water into the city via the city moat at the entrance to the wall. Today, you can look at these picturesque streets. Memmingen calls itself the "gateway to the Allgäu" or the "city of gates, towers and gables". I would also add "city of fountains", because you come across a different fountain on almost every corner. A very large part of the medieval old town survived the Second World War and the post-war years. Much of the historic building structure has been preserved, but has also had to be extensively renovated over the decades. If you walk through the pedestrian zone and the old town, you will repeatedly come across beautiful historic craftsmen's houses. Here we see the witch tower, the oldest surviving city tower in Memmingen. It dates back to the founding period of the city around 1150. It is a former prison tower. It is not known whether the tower got its name from the time of the witch hunts and whether witches were possibly imprisoned there. The parish church of St. Martin is a listed building. It is one of the oldest churches in Upper Swabia. The church borders the market square area and, at around 65 meters, is the tallest building in the city. It was the scene of the Memmingen Reformation in the 16th century and is now the main church of the Evangelical Lutheran church district of Memmingen. The tower clock from 1524, which was the first wheel clock to be put into operation, is of remarkable beauty. Traces of settlement dating back to the 2nd century AD have been found at the site. It can therefore be assumed that the Romans founded the city of Memmingen here.
