Marape CHARTS August, Endgame for Bougainville
Prime Minister Calls for Respect of Bougainville Referendum Outcome Prime Minister James Marape has reaffirmed that the outcome of Bougainville’s independence referendum must be respected, while outlining a pathway to conclude the long-running peace process. Addressing Parliament, Mr Marape proposed that the Bougainville peace process be formally brought to a close on August 30, 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Bougainville Peace Agreement. The Prime Minister said the milestone presents a significant opportunity for Papua New Guinea and Bougainville to honour the commitments made under the peace agreement and move forward in a spirit of unity and mutual respect. Mr Marape emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the Bougainville people as expressed through the 2019 referendum, while ensuring that all constitutional and parliamentary processes are properly observed before a final political settlement is reached. The proposal is expected to form part of ongoing discussions between the National Government and the Autonomous Bougainville Government as both parties work towards a lasting resolution on Bougainville’s political future. #currentaffairs #world #viral
