Built around 970 AD by Conrad I, Count of Ventimiglia, it is widely recognized as the oldest feudal castle in France. Its primary purpose was to defend the region against Saracen raids, serving as a strategic lookout that offers 360-degree views of the coastline. Architectural Highlights The citadel is a masterclass in Carolingian and Romanesque military architecture: The Keep: The heart of the fortress, featuring massive walls (some over 2 meters thick) designed to withstand prolonged sieges.
