Temporada del boquerón en Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz)

The anchovy season has begun in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) after a five-month biological rest period. This break entails significant expenses for boat owners but guarantees fishing until November. Of the eight purse seine vessels, only six have set sail. After twelve hours of fishing and spending the entire night awake, they are approaching the port of Bonanza in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz). Boats like the “Francisco y Caridad,” the “Nuevo Antequera,” the “Nuevo Sirena Mar,” and the “Estrella Bajo Guía” are hurrying to unload their catches, which are quickly taken to the fish market for auction. The arrival of second-hand anchovies from other ports and the quality of the catches regulate prices. There is talk within the industry of regulating catches with a daily limit per boat. Something similar is being negotiated for the sardine, on which this purse seine fleet depends. Faced with declining fishing grounds, the sector can defend its prices through quality, freshness, and proximity. Environmental conditions also explain the decrease in catches and quotas for anchovy, sardine, and horse mackerel. Regulating fishing effort is a necessity, as the European Union has already predicted. The port of Bonanza also has a gillnet and trawl fleet dedicated to clams. The latter faces a biological rest period of at least 12 months, for which the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has planned aid. The Sanlúcar fishermen's guild is exploring new management strategies. They are studying the aquaculture of fingerlings for stocking at sea. The anchovy season remains open until November. Speakers: Joaquín Pozo (Owner of the "Nuevo Antequera"), Antonio Roncero (Owner of the "Nuevo Sirena Mar" and Deputy Chairman of the Sanlúcar de Barrameda Fishermen's Association), Juan Luis Odero (Owner of the "Nuevo Estrella Bajo de Guía"), Daniel Odero (Seaman of the "Nuevo Estrella Bajo de Guía"), José Carlos Macias (Sanlúcar de Barrameda Fishermen's Association).
