Alopecia: riconoscerla e utilizzare la terapia migliore
Alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia are the most common forms of this condition. Let's look at how to recognize and treat them. We'll do so with Professor Rocco De Pasquale, Director of Dermatology at the University of Catania's Rodolico-San Marco University Hospital, San Marco Hospital in Catania. WHAT IS ALOPECIA AREATA? Alopecia areata usually affects the scalp and manifests as oval or circular bald patches. The most affected areas of the scalp are the occipital and temporal regions, unlike other forms of baldness, such as androgenetic alopecia, which primarily affect the crown of the head. Alopecia areata was also formerly called Celsi area and is defined as non-scarring because in many cases it resolves spontaneously without showing signs of scarring. CAN IT OCCUR IN CONNECTION WITH OTHER PATHOLOGIES? Yes, the conditions are: • Celiac disease • Type 1 diabetes mellitus • Rheumatoid arthritis • Psoriatic arthritis • Vitiligo • Systemic lupus erythematosus • Hyperthyroidism • Hashimoto's thyroiditis • Fibromyalgia • Autoimmune chronic atrophic gastritis CAN ALOPECIA AREATA BE CURED? Common alopecia areata can resolve naturally, without any treatment. Solutions based on 2% or 5% minoxidil are effective. Minoxidil promotes vasodilation of the capillaries that supply blood to the hair follicles. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ALOPECIA AREATA AND ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA? Androgenetic alopecia is a more common form of alopecia than alopecia areata. It affects men more than women. While androgenetic alopecia is typical of adulthood and old age, alopecia areata occurs predominantly at a young age and only rarely after age 60. Furthermore, the main causes of androgenetic alopecia are related to the activity of the enzyme 5α-reductase type II, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. A final difference is that in the case of common alopecia areata, hair tends, in most cases, to regrow spontaneously. In androgenetic alopecia, however, the follicle undergoes complete atrophy. _______________ Images are used. _______________ To learn more about this and other topics, visit Medical Excellence TV: https://www.medicalexcellencetv.it/al...
