When faced with a one-on-one breakthrough in soccer, many players imagine they have spectacularly beaten the opponent in their heads, but their feet simply won't cooperate. It is easy to assume this is due to a lack of technique or ball touch issues, but the real cause lies in failing to properly push off the ground with the first step. No matter how strong your thighs and glutes are, if you cannot channel that power into the ground, your body will not spring forward instantly. The key to transferring power to the ground is the big toe. The video begins with a method to check where your body weight is distributed while standing still. If you press the ground with the metatarsal head of your big toe, you can feel the sensation of tension in the adductor hallucis muscle of the sole of your foot and the peroneus longus muscle on the outer side of your calf. I will guide you through step-by-step strengthening exercises, ranging from holding on the mat to moving left and right, and even side steps, with a live demonstration. Since the peroneus longus muscle prevents the ankle from bending inward, it helps not only with soccer breakthroughs and directional changes but also with preventing ankle injuries. When breaking through, you must push off the ground strongly with one foot to move your body forward; if your big toe does not provide support, the ball will be blocked by the opponent no matter how well you place it.
