Wushan County is situated at the eastern edge of Chongqing Municipality and the heart of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, known as the "Gateway to Northeastern Chongqing". It spans both banks of the Wu Gorge on the Yangtze River, bordering Badong County (Hubei) to the east, Jianshi County (Hubei) to the south, Fengjie County (Chongqing) to the west, and Wuxi County (Chongqing) as well as the Shennongjia Forest District (Hubei) to the north. Covering an area of 2,958 square kilometers, the county administers 26 towns and subdistricts, along with 340 villages and residential communities. By the end of 2024, Wushan had a permanent population of 454,500 and an urbanization rate of 47.33%. Wushan has earned numerous honors for its ecology and tourism: it was named a "China Natural Oxygen Bar" in July 2019, selected as one of the first batch of National All-Region Tourism Demonstration Zones in September 2019, listed among the Top 100 Counties for Cultural and Tourism Integration Competitiveness in 2024, recognized as a National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone in 2025, and awarded the title of "2025 Beautiful Famous County". The Zhengzhou-Chongqing High-Speed Railway officially opened on June 20, 2022, with Wushan Station put into service, greatly improving regional transportation connectivity. In 2024, Wushan County achieved a regional GDP of 25.616 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%. The ratio of the three industrial structures was 15.9:25.1:59.0, and the per capita GDP reached approximately 56,100 yuan.
