Honestly, this minimum-maximum principle appeals to most of us. And many low-carb diets promise exactly this effect, because with these nutritional tips, you're supposed to lose fat quickly even without exercise or starving yourself. The magic word here is ketone bodies. And of course, don't worry if you've never heard of them before, or if the term "ketone body" is a bit of a mystery to you, because when it comes to ketone bodies, we're already deep into the realm of medicinal chemistry. So today, let's look at how ketone bodies can be described in an understandable way, from a medical perspective. What are ketone bodies? There are three different chemical compounds that are called ketone bodies. These are, and here come the really tricky terms: 1) acetone, 2) acetoacetate, and 3) beta-hydroxybutrate. The last one, in particular, is of great importance for our body's energy production. Chemists will rightly point out that it's not a ketone, but since it's often considered one of the ketones in the context of the ketogenic diet, I'll refrain from making the exact distinction here. All three are actually just byproducts of our body, but their special properties can be used to advantage, for example, for weight loss. The two or three ketones mentioned are important for our energy supply. Especially when no carbohydrates are available, the body can quickly provide energy by producing ketone bodies. This is important: no carbohydrates, then energy is generated through ketone bodies. How do I achieve ketosis? The simple answer is actually: do nothing. Ketogenesis is triggered when we have less readily available energy than we need. Exercise can, of course, increase energy requirements and intensify ketosis, but in principle, we just have to wait until our available energy sources run out. Good ketogenic foods include almost all types of animal products such as meat, cheese, and eggs. Oils and many vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower, and especially all green vegetables, are also low in carbohydrates and quickly bring us into ketosis. On the other hand, you should reduce your intake of fruits, berries, and nuts, and avoid foods like milk, corn, beans, and typical starchy side dishes altogether. A simple rule of thumb: Fats and proteins are great, carbohydrates are a definite ketosis killer.
