Have you ever seen a marathon on a frozen lake? ❄️⛸️ Every winter in Kuopio, Finland, something incredible happens. When the ice on Lake Kallavesi becomes thick enough, thousands of skaters gather for the Finland Ice Marathon ! One of the most unique winter sports events in the world. 🌍 After living in Kuopio for almost four years, this was my first time experiencing the event in person. 😃 The marathon takes place entirely on natural lake ice, with racers skating distances of 22.5 km, 52.5 km, and even 105 km across a frozen landscape. ⛸️❄️ The weekend also includes the magical Moonlight Skating event, where people skate under the night sky along a torch-lit track. 🌙🔥 Coming from Sri Lanka, where water means beaches and tropical heat 🌴☀️, seeing hundreds of people racing across a frozen lake still feels surreal.
