It is crucial for patients to be able to identify this condition, as changes in the mucosa tend to progress. Symptoms and Progression: Mucositis manifests with redness of the mucosa, altered sensation, and, as it progresses, with sores that may appear on the tongue and cheeks. These sores typically appear after the second or third cycle of chemotherapy, causing difficulties chewing, eating, speaking, and holding a conversation. Impact on Quality of Life: Functional limitations can lead to a decreased desire for social interaction and complicate eating, worsening the patient's immune status. Advanced mucositis can cause significant weight loss and increase immunosuppression. Prevention and Treatment: Identifying mucositis in its early stages is essential for effective treatment and minimizing functional limitations. Prevention includes proper oral hygiene with soft toothbrushes and mouthwashes that maintain a neutral pH. Low-frequency laser treatments can stimulate vascularization and prevent mucositis. Comprehensive Support in the High-Risk Dental Unit: In our unit, we work collaboratively to support patients from the beginning of their cancer treatment. We offer advice on oral complications and treatment for mucositis, dry mouth, cavities, and other complications. Final Recommendations: Regular follow-up and comprehensive support are crucial for navigating cancer treatment with the fewest possible complications. #OralMucositis #Oncology #OralHealth #Prevention #CancerTreatment #RuberInternationalHospital #Dentistry #QualityOfLife
