Diálogos en confianza (Salud) - Hablemos del Cáncer Colorrectal (03/04/2017)

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that colorectal cancer is the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide. In Mexico, data from the National Cancer Institute (INCan), under the Ministry of Health, show that 8,651 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year, and only 20 percent are detected in early stages. Colon cancer is a disease that originates from the appearance of abnormal cells in the tissues of the colon. Among the major risk factors are the presence of polyps (growths) in the rectum, aging, family history, a diet high in fat and low in fiber, a sedentary lifestyle, and high consumption of red, processed, and smoked meats. Currently, prevention focuses on addressing modifiable risk factors, such as diet and tobacco use, and on early detection campaigns for people over 50 years of age, or younger individuals if their personal or family history puts them at higher risk of developing this type of cancer.
