FOB Martello, Kandahar: Spark Plugs, IEDs and Medical Outreach
Inside FOB Martello near Kandahar, a CIMIC patrol fights to win trust with spark plugs, water pumps and a medical outreach as IEDs, suspicion and setbacks mount. Post Operation Medusa, the Canadian Provincial Reconstruction Team pushes back out from a mountain-top base about 100 km north of Kandahar City, a place soldiers liken to Fort Apache. Led by Sergeant Bascon, the civil-military cooperation team walks daily into nearby villages to listen to elders, repair broken water pumps and source simple parts like spark plugs, all while maintaining a tight security bubble in a landscape where a farmer can become a gunman in seconds. One village elder, claiming to be 104, says he has waited out every army to come through. The mission is anything but simple. An IED strike rocks a convoy, leaving a driver with shrapnel wounds and a near miss from an engine block. A hunt through a bustling market turns up fruit and bread but no spark plugs, and warning shots intended to enforce standoff accidentally flip a local truck, forcing the team to treat injured women as cultural barriers complicate the response. Tensions rise further when US Special Forces detain a man in El-Bak without notice to the PRT. Aid deliveries stall when a sniffer dog flags a container, blocking winter supplies meant to build goodwill. Still, small wins matter: two of thirteen pumps are coaxed back to life. The team pivots to its first village medical outreach of the tour, screening men, women and children as girls arrive earlier and in greater numbers than before. When the doctors run out of medication, rations are shared so no one leaves empty-handed. As FOB Martello is shut down, soldiers reflect on whether six-month tours can ever build lasting trust. One voice longs to stay and finish the work; another insists the timing was right. War Story: Afghanistan captures the fragile balance of security and service, and the human cost of leaving. #Afghanistan #Kandahar #FOBMartello #OperationMedusa #CIMIC #PRT #Documentary
