Braga is a historic city in the Minho region of northern Portugal, located around 55 kilometres northeast of Porto. It is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, originally founded as Bracara Augusta during the Roman Empire. Today, Braga is a regional administrative centre with a population of over 180,000 in the wider municipality. For visitors to Braga, the city is known for its well-preserved historic centre, religious landmarks and compact layout. The central district includes pedestrianised streets, public squares and a mix of architectural styles ranging from medieval to Baroque. The Sé de Braga (Braga Cathedral) is one of the city’s most important sites, dating back to the 11th century. It reflects a combination of Romanesque, Gothic and later Baroque influences, and includes chapels, cloisters and a treasury. A major attraction for those visiting Braga is Bom Jesus do Monte, a religious sanctuary located on a hill to the east of the city. The site is known for its monumental Baroque staircase, which ascends in a series of terraces featuring fountains and statues. It is accessible by road, walking routes, or a historic funicular railway powered by a water-balance system. The sanctuary is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing and provides elevated views over Braga and the surrounding landscape. Braga is often associated with religious traditions and is sometimes referred to as the “Rome of Portugal” due to its high concentration of churches and ecclesiastical importance. The city also has a modern side influenced by the presence of the University of Minho. This combination of historic and contemporary elements is reflected in Braga’s public spaces, cafés and cultural events. Transport connections to Braga are straightforward. The city is linked to Porto by regular train services, with journey times of approximately one hour from Porto Campanhã railway station. Braga railway station is located within walking distance of the city centre. Road access is provided via the A3 motorway, connecting Braga with Porto and other northern destinations. The climate in Braga is temperate, with warm summers and mild winters. Rainfall is more frequent than in southern Portugal, particularly during autumn and winter months. Summer temperatures typically range between 20°C and 30°C.
