[Reporter] Yes, heavy rain of around 20 to 30 mm per hour poured down this morning, mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, and Gangwon regions. Shall we take a look at the radar image? A strong band of rain clouds that developed over the West Sea since dawn is moving inland. These rain clouds, formed along a stationary front, rapidly passed through the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, and Gangwon regions, pouring down heavy rain during the morning commute. Fortunately, due to their rapid movement, they did not linger in one area for long, and most of the rain clouds have now moved eastward. [Anchor] But is this rain just a preview? [Reporter] Yes, you can consider the rain that poured this morning as the first stage of today's heavy rainfall. Shall we take a look at the screen? This is a weather map at around 5km above sea level. The edge of the North Pacific high-pressure system has moved up to the southern regions, and the stationary front is positioned along this edge, forming rain clouds. In addition, cold, dry air from the upper atmosphere is descending along the low-pressure system to the north. As this cold air met the warm, humid air below, the rain clouds developed intensely. However, the important point is that this cold air does not come straight down like a slide, but rather descends while rotating, creating a vortex much like stirring coffee or draining water from a bathtub. Let's look at the screen again. If you look at this morning's radar, rain clouds are forming a long band. Warm, humid air is continuously being pushed in front of the rotating cold air, carried by the southwesterly wind. This air acts as fuel for the rain clouds, causing them to develop into long, stretched-out clouds as they move. In the morning, the front part of the air mass passed by, and while rain fell sporadically and stopped repeatedly during the day, starting tonight, the rain clouds that developed from the rear will move in, marking the beginning of heavy rainfall in earnest. [Anchor] Will the rain clouds coming in tonight bring a 'water bomb'? [Reporter] Yes, shall we take a look at the screen? Tonight, as the rear part of the cold air mass moves in, the cold air from the northwest will begin to push down in earnest. We expect it to start moving in around 9 PM. While this cold air pushes the stationary front southward, the North Pacific high-pressure system is holding its ground below, ensuring a continuous supply of warm and humid air. As the mutual pushing force between air masses with different properties intensifies, the rain clouds become compressed into a long east-west line, slowing their movement speed. This causes the rain clouds to linger in one area for an extended period, continuously pouring heavy rain down on the same spot. Currently, the likelihood of these conditions forming is highest in Chungnam and Jeonbuk provinces. Between tonight and early tomorrow morning, very heavy rain exceeding 50mm per hour is expected, with the peak projected around 3 AM. [Reporter] Usually, rain exceeding 30mm per hour is referred to as "heavy rain." When rainfall starts exceeding 50mm per hour, drainage becomes inefficient ...
