Napoleon Bonaparte Ep.3: From Consul to Emperor (1799-1807)

On a tense November day in 1799, a 30-year-old general walked into the French legislature surrounded by soldiers and tried to overthrow the government — and very nearly failed. Within five years he would place a crown on his own head inside Notre-Dame. Within six, he was the undisputed master of the European continent. This is Episode 3 of "Napoleon: Rise and Fall," a five-part series that follows Napoleon Bonaparte in order, from an unknown lieutenant to the master of Europe, and all the way down again. In this episode: the coup of 18 Brumaire (9-10 Nov 1799) that made him First Consul; the audacious crossing of the Alps and the near-disaster turned triumph at Marengo (14 June 1800); the rebuilding of France and the Napoleonic Code (21 March 1804); the leap to monarchy as he is proclaimed Emperor (18 May 1804) and crowns himself at Notre-Dame (2 Dec 1804). Then the great deadlock that defines everything: Britain's navy destroys the French fleet at Trafalgar (21 Oct 1805) and kills the dream of invading England — even as Napoleon wins his masterpiece at Austerlitz (2 Dec 1805), dissolves the thousand-year Holy Roman Empire (6 Aug 1806), shatters Prussia at Jena-Auerstedt (14 Oct 1806), and finally meets Tsar Alexander on a raft at Tilsit (7-9 July 1807) as master of the continent. Land power supreme against sea power untouchable — the deadlock that will one day doom him. History told honestly, light on its feet but firm on the facts. New episodes in the series every week.
