Renault Safrane 2.5 Executive road test review. Is it just a more expensive Laguna???
In 1992 Renault released upon the world a new executive car to replace their aging luxury hatchback, the 25. In France the hatchback had been very popular whereas in other parts of the world buyers had continued to favour saloon cars in this class. Renault was determined to shake off its reputation for building flimsy, cheep cars starting with the Renault 19 in 1989 which was designed to have a more Germanic feel than its predecessor. The brief was consistent across the range every time a new model was released with the Clio setting new standards of refinement and being awarded car of the year. The Executive segment is fiercely competitive in the UK, especially back in the 1990's before the changes to taxation of company cars. Renault had to pull out all the stops with the Safrane if they were to stand a chance. It takes a lot to sway buyers from the established German prestige brands so Renault created a different sort of executive care for a more discerning buyer who values the practicality of a hatchback but the luxury and refinement of a luxury saloon car. Renault invested a whopping £800M of which half of that was invested in the factory building the new car. Safrane would be larger and heavier than the typical large car available to most company fleets with a much more solid body construction, additional sound deadening and a range of smooth, powerful engines from around 2.0 up to a Twin Turbo 3.0 V6 in the Europe only Safrane Bi Turbo which also offered four wheel drive. some models were also available with computer controlled adaptive suspension designed for maximum comfort and efficiency.
