Burswood was once an island?

Before Burswood was a peninsula, it was an island. And before it was an island... it was a peninsula. I always wondered why Burswood was labelled as an island on old maps. After some research, it turns out it's because of Perth's first-ever infrastructure project: a canal. The Burswood Canal (or "Old Burswood Canal" as it's usually referred to) was constructed in the 1830s to cut off a difficult boat journey around the peninsula. In this video, I go into the history of Burswood (including the Crown Casino, Optus Stadium, Swan Cement Works, John Hardie Asbestos, golf, a tip etc), how this first for public works came about and what remains today!
