But can Dutch “Trump Whisperer” achieve what it takes to keep the U.S. president invested in NATO, or is he just demeaning himself? “He is doing exactly what he needs to do. The job of the Secretary General is to keep the United States and Europe together. President Trump really likes that kind of attention and flattery and getting the credit for everything,” Kurt Volker, former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO, told TVP World. “A lot of European leaders don't want to do that. And I can see why in domestic politics, it may not even be helpful to them domestically to be seen to be cozying up to Trump that way. So, they should all be grateful that the Secretary General is doing it for them,” he added.
