The cruise departs from the port of Salalah, Oman, and its destination is the island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea. The region has experienced profound political instability for years, and this is the first time a trip like this will explore those waters. 490 kilometers separate Oman from the island of Socotra, which covers almost 3,800 square kilometers and belongs to Yemen. Amidst the simple buildings and precarious structures of Hadibu, the island's main city, Alvaro visits a studio showcasing the work of local artists. One of the main sources of inspiration is the symbolic tree of Socotra. As you move away from the city, wildlife dominates the landscape. More than a third of Socotra's plant species are found nowhere else. For this reason, UNESCO has declared the site one of its World Heritage sites. Furthermore, almost all of the island's reptile species are found only there. Alvaro also encountered another Socotra icon: a tree that resembles an umbrella, the so-called "dragon's blood" tree. It is a true testament to nature's constant struggle for survival. Its curious shape helps capture moisture from the air while protecting its roots from the intense sun.
