Exploring the Hidden History Beneath Maryland’s Patuxent Reservoirs - Rocky Gorge and Triadelphia

Beneath the quiet waters of Maryland’s Patuxent reservoirs lies a hidden landscape of flooded roads, vanished bridges, abandoned farms, and even an entire lost town. In this video, we explore the history of Rocky Gorge and Triadelphia Reservoirs along the Patuxent River — from the construction of the dams in the 1940s and 1950s to the communities and transportation routes that disappeared beneath the rising waters. Along the way, we’ll uncover remnants of the old Columbia Turnpike, the forgotten crossing at Green’s Bridge, and the story of the vanished mill town of Triadelphia. We’ll also compare historic aerial imagery and maps with modern drone footage to see how dramatically the landscape has changed over the past century. Locations featured in this video include: • Rocky Gorge Reservoir / T. Howard Duckett Dam • Triadelphia Reservoir / Brighton Dam • Old Columbia Road • Greenbridge Recreation Area • Triadelphia Recreation Area • Brighton Azalea Garden Special thanks to Dr. Steven Curtis for his excellent “Triadelphia Exposed” research documenting the ruins revealed during the 2018 low water levels.
