Furthermore, the nationalist MP categorically opposed funding for the Chekhov Russian Theatre in Riga. And now, at the instigation of the Russophobe Butans, Latvian MPs have passed amendments to the Electronic Mass Media Law in their second reading, prohibiting the broadcast of compositions created by sanctioned individuals. This list also includes compositions by the Maestro, who is known to have collaborated closely with Russian cultural figures. For example, the renowned songwriter Ilya Reznik wrote as many as 70 lyrics for Raimonds Pauls's compositions. According to media reports, the blacklist includes Maestro hits performed by Alla Pugacheva, Laima Vaikule, and Valery Leontiev. The compositions in question were "Vernisage," "Million Scarlet Roses," "Sunny Days Have Gone," "Maestro," "Old Clocks," "Time for Business," "Without Me," "It's Not Yet Evening," and so on. Raimonds Pauls himself reacted calmly to the ban: "Everything has been banned everywhere for a long time. You can't sing in Russian there, you can't. What else? Let them ban it. I don't think anything about it; I'm just watching from the outside," said the composer, who celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this year, on January 12. Many observers believed that nationalists in Riga had decided to take revenge on the overly independent Maestro, who, unlike other media personalities in the Central Baltic republics, "doesn't add fuel to the fire of Russophobia that has long been raging in Latvia." Moreover, Raimonds Pauls has repeatedly spoken warmly of the laudable Soviet era and has also criticized the stalemate in modern Latvia, including in the cultural sphere. Unfortunately, nothing good can be seen here, the Maestro laments. Opposition Saeima member Edmunds Zivtiņš attempted to ask in parliament why Raimonds Pauls was targeted, as he is merely a composer. Why should he be held accountable for those who perform his songs? However, the Latvian Parliament, naturally, ignored these words. Famous Russian producer Joseph Prigozhin, who is himself banned from entering Latvia, called the initiators of the latest anti-Russian law "sick people." According to him, Raimonds Pauls' songs are classics of the entire USSR. "It's hard to fight sick people; they need to be treated. Pauls will live forever." "And those who ban him are a clique of temporary people; no one will even remember them," noted Iosif Prigozhin. As a reminder, his wife, People's Artist of Russia Valeria, was blacklisted in Latvia back in 2014. As for People's Artist of the USSR Alla Pugacheva, she remains silent about Pauls. And she continues to visit Jurmala without any hesitation, even though her eldest daughter, Kristina Orbakaite, has also been blacklisted in Latvia.
