Essen has been officially a "bicycle-friendly city" since 1995 – yet in 2024, it still only ranked 14th out of 15 in the ADFC Bicycle Climate Test. How is that possible? In this video, I take a closer look at Essen's cycling infrastructure: from the flagship RS1 project and the protected bike lane on Huyssenallee to dangerous bike lanes and wide car lanes right in the city center.
