Turkey's Most Populous Town KEPEZ Kepez, located in the center of Çanakkale, is Turkey's most populous town. It has a population of around 40,000. It is 5 km from both Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and the city center. Due to its location on the seashore, the town has attracted a significant influx of retirees in recent years. As both Çanakkale and the town have grown, it has become a town in the heart of the city center. With many of Çanakkale's institutions and organizations now located within the town's borders, the town's population has also increased significantly. Numerous government institutions, such as universities and hospitals, are also located within the town's borders. Neither the locals nor the residents of Çanakkale know where the borders of the town and the city center of Çanakkale separate. The village was first established after 28 families emigrating from Bulgaria after the Russo-Turkish War of 1878 settled in the area called Kepezaltı. Originally named "Hamidiye" when it was founded, the settlement was renamed Kepez during the Republican era. It received municipal status on November 2, 1991, becoming a town. There is occasionally talk of closing the municipality and integrating it into the Çanakkale Municipality. The town's most beautiful area is its coastline. Located on the Anatolian side of the Dardanelles, the town's coastline is beautiful and very lively. Picnic areas, walking paths, restaurants, and cafes line the shore. There's also a municipal beach and a municipal cafe.
