Arcadianism in Brazil occurred in the 18th century and had its main stage in Minas Gerais. With the exception of the Portuguese Tomás Antônio Gonzaga, all the main Arcadian figures were born there. They are: Claudio Manuel da Costa, Basílio da Gama, and Frei de Santa Rita Durão. Furthermore, we can associate Arcadianism with the Enlightenment, an intellectual and philosophical movement of the late 17th and 18th centuries. Associated with Enlightenment ideology are the words reason and science, which were considered fundamental to explaining the world. The rationalism of this period is also related to scientific advances. This was when, for example, Isaac Newton formulated the law of gravity, and in Biology, the classification of living beings began. In this social context, common sense meant not giving in to imagination and fantasy. Thus, there was no longer room for Baroque ideology, which was considered exaggerated, unbalanced, and in poor taste. Arcadianism in Brazil and the Minas Gerais Conspiracy In neoclassical times, Brazil was experiencing a sugarcane crisis and the exploitation of gold and precious stone mines. Thus, the focus of the northeast, the epicenter of the Baroque period, shifted to the southeast—Minas Gerais, more specifically. Economic prosperity, resulting from the region's natural wealth, gave rise to literature. This occurred through a group of writers: the Minas Gerais group. This type of organization was new to our country, which, until then, had only experienced isolated instances of literary expression. Furthermore, a reading public began to exist, albeit in a rather modest way. This allowed the author-work-public system to gain momentum. Many of the writers, incidentally, were influenced by ideas from the effervescent, Enlightenment, and revolutionary France. These writers spearheaded the Inconfidência Mineira (1789), a movement that resisted the abusive measures of the exploitative Portuguese administration.
