Alaska - Endicott Arm Glacier Excursion – Is Dawes Glacier by Small Boat Worth It?

Planning an Alaska cruise with a glacier day? This is the small-boat glacier excursion that many cruisers do not realize they can book. On our Star Princess Alaska cruise, we boarded the Alaska Glacier Explorer directly from the cruise ship in Endicott Arm and headed deeper into the fjord toward Dawes Glacier. The big ship gave us incredible views, but the smaller expedition-style boat took us where the cruise ship could not go—through floating glacier ice, beneath towering waterfalls, closer to wildlife, and right up near the face of Dawes Glacier. Cruise lines use different names for this type of excursion. You may see Glacier Explorer, Fjord Explorer, Dawes Glacier by Small Boat, Endicott Arm Glacier Explorer, Tracy Arm Glacier Explorer, or a similar ship-to-ship glacier excursion listed for your sailing. We had previously done a similar experience from Carnival Miracle in Tracy Arm to Sawyer Glacier, and now we experienced Dawes Glacier from Star Princess in Endicott Arm. Both were unforgettable, but this excursion absolutely exceeded our expectations. In this video, we show you the full experience: the early-morning scenic sail-in, the ship-to-ship transfer, floating blue ice, glacier calving, Dawes Glacier up close, waterfalls, a black bear, sea lions, bald eagles, humpback whales, Glacieritas made with real glacier ice, and our return directly into Juneau. The cruise ship gives you the big Alaska picture. This small boat puts you in the middle of it. Whether you sail Princess, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, or another cruise line, check your shore-excursion list carefully on glacier day. Availability, route, vessel, timing, and glacier access can vary by itinerary and conditions, but this is the type of Alaska excursion we would book again without hesitation.
