⚽ Football Goal Netting: Rescue Video 1 — Roe Deer, Abbots Wood, Hailsham As part of our campaign highlighting the dangers of sports netting to wildlife, we are sharing a series of real rescues involving animals caught in football goal nets. This first video dates back to 11th June 2014, when WRAS was called to Abbots Wood near Hailsham after a roe deer became trapped in a child’s football goal net. The deer had become badly entangled and, like many wild animals caught in netting, was understandably frightened and at risk of injuring itself further while struggling to escape. Incidents like this show how quickly a garden football goal, if left out with loose netting, can become a serious hazard for wildlife. Please note: this rescue took place in 2014, and WRAS’s PPE, safety procedures and rescue protocols have changed significantly since then. The video is being shared to show the danger posed by netting, not as current guidance on how rescues should be carried out. Football goals, garden nets and sports netting should always be safely stored, lifted or tied up when not in use — especially overnight, when many wild animals are most active. 🦌 Deer, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs and birds can all become trapped. ⚽ Even a small child’s football goal can cause a major wildlife emergency. 🌙 Never leave loose netting trailing on the ground overnight. ✅ When the final whistle blows, put the nets away. If you find a wild animal caught in netting, please do not rush in or try to free it without advice. Wild animals can panic, injure themselves further, or injure you. Keep people and pets away, reduce noise and stress, and contact your local wildlife rescue service for help.
