Lecture 12 (2014). Transient heat conduction. Contact of two semi-infinite solids
This lecture continues with unsteady/transient heat conduction. The lecture focuses on contact between two semi-infinite solids. The surface temperature between the two solids is derived. The influence of the surface temperature on the material properties is discussed. An example is considered of a person walking over a tiled floor, carpet and copper plate. The contact temperature, heat flux and heat transfer rates are discussed. The lecture was based on the textbook of Cengel and Ghajar (4th edition) and was presented as part of a heat transfer class to the fourth year students of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering by Prof Josua Meyer, Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Lecture was presented on 20 February 2014.
