Kurgan was founded in 1679 by the peasant Timofey Nevezhin. In 1782, by decree of Catherine II, it was granted city status, but a settlement had existed on this site since 1553. It is located in the Southern Trans-Urals, on the banks of the Tobol River (primarily on the left bank). It is home to approximately 300,000 people.
