"The Reign of Justinian" | Lecture 9 Yale University (HIST 210) – in Ukrainian Channel support: https://uadd.me/KHMARYNKA The reign of Emperor Justinian (527–565) is one of the most striking and at the same time most controversial periods in the history of the Byzantine Empire. In this video, the lecturer analyzes how an ambitious attempt to restore the greatness of the Roman Empire turned into a dangerous experiment with unpredictable consequences. You will learn about Justinian's large-scale conquests in North Africa, Italy and Spain, as well as why these victories were the beginning of the exhaustion of the state. The lecture analyzes the key events of the era: the "Nika" uprising, which almost destroyed Constantinople, the devastating plague of 542, which claimed millions of lives, and the constant wars with Persia. We will pay special attention to the figure of Justinian himself - his character, political decisions and desire for absolute power, as well as the role of Empress Theodora, one of the most influential women of her time. The video also examines the works of the historian Procopius, in particular "The Secret History", which opens a shocking view of the emperor and his entourage. Was Justinian a brilliant reformer, or a ruler who laid the foundations for the future decline of Byzantium? This is a story about greatness, ambition and the price that had to be paid for them. 00:00 Introduction.
