Japanese Military Rations - Then vs. Now

Today, we’re heading to the Far East to analyze the evolution of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) combat rations. We’re comparing a March 2002 Type II Side Dish against a modern 2020 Braised Pork Belly (Kakuni) integrated tray system. The Breakdown 2020 Modern System: An incredibly efficient "sandwich" design. Two trays of white rice with a perfectly nested pork belly pouch. The flavor profile? Sweet, savory, and hints of ginger. Using the Nori (seaweed) to make rolls added a saltiness that brought the whole "system" together. Diagnosis: Delicious! 2002 Vintage System: A 24-year-old time capsule that didn't quite hold up to the test of time. From a mushroom soup that smelled like burnt plastic to a "Play-Doh" stir-fry, we saw some significant chemical failures. The bamboo shoots were the ultimate failure point—mushy, rotten, and a clear sign of pouch delamination.
