How to Make Treacle Bread
Ever heard of Treacle Bread? It's something they eat "across the pond" and something I've only read about it books. Until now, that is. Today I made Treacle Bread by substituting molasses for the treacle (apparently it's a type of thick syrup). It was delicious, easy to make, and we enjoyed it. I'm adding it to my menu rotation, so be looking for it on my Facebook and Instagram posts. Now, on to the recipe! TREACLE BREAD 2 Cups All Purpose Flour 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda 1/2 Teaspoon Salt Scant 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Ginger 1 1/4 Cups Buttermilk, plus additional if needed 1/4 Cup Molasses 1. Preheat CONVENTIONAL OVEN to 375. (Please note, I do NOT recommend making this in an Air Fryer.) 2. Combine dry ingredients: flours, baking soda, salt, and ginger in a large bowl. Stir to incorporate. Make a "well" in the center. 3. With a wire whisk, stir the molasses into the buttermilk - either in a 2 cup measuring cup OR in a bowl. 4. Pour buttermilk mixture into the flour well. Stir to combine. It will be a dry dough. IF NEEDED, add buttermilk 1 Tablespoon at a time until all flour is mixed into the dough. 5. Turn out onto a floured counter and knead 8-10 times. Do not overwork the dough! 6. Pat into a circle - about 1 1/2 inches thick - and transfer to a parchment paper lined baking dish. 7. Cut an X across the top of the dough. Cut at least 1/2 inch into the dough. 8. Bake about 35 minutes - or until bread sounds hollow when thumped. 9. Remove to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm with butter.
