Most of the 15 km Dirai-Shamarchar road in Sunamganj was in dilapidated condition. The locals had to take risks every day on the ditches. Only 15 km of the 19 km Dirai Shyamarchar road in Sunamganj, Hao was inaccessible. However, the road is the only means of transportation for the people of Shalla Upazila, Mohanganj and Khaliajuri of the adjoining Netrokona district. Thousands of people used to travel every day at the risk of their lives on dilapidated roads due to lack of reforms. The traders were also in trouble with traveling to Shamarchar Bazaar, the only commercial heart of the district. Locals complained of using low quality bricks, sand and stones in the renovation work. But looking at this road today, one would not think for a second that even a few days ago it was full of potholes. At present, there are many benefits for the locals to travel. It used to take about two hours to go from Dirai to Shamarchar. But now it takes about forty minutes. School-college students are able to reach their destination in a short time. A project to build a 19-kilometer Dirai-Shalla road was started in 2011 with the help of the late Suranjit Sengupta, the late leader of the area, in response to long-standing demands of the locals. But some work of this project was done but later that work was not completed. Many bridges and culverts did not have connecting roads. Somewhere the soil of the road was washed away by the waves of the haor. As a result, road communication could not be fully introduced. The project, promised by the Prime Minister, was allocated Rs 119 crore at the end of 2010. Work on the road started in 2011 after the tender process. However, before the completion of the road work, many places were damaged. Most of the road was narrow because the slope was not right. The block given to protect the road from the waves of the haor ran away in many places. There was no approach road on the 3 small bridges of the road. Most of the 18 culverts had no soil at the approach. In a report of a national daily on September 27 of the current year, Sunamganj Roads and Highways Executive Engineer. Zahirul Islam said the project proposal for this road has been sent to the Ministry of Roads and Bridges long ago. In the internal verification and selection committee, a project proposal of Tk 551 crore was fixed for road construction. Later, after inspecting the site from the design section, the project proposal was raised to Tk 857 crore. He added that work on the road is underway. The width of the road has been reduced to 9.9 meters. As the road passes through Haoranchal, work is being done in coordination with the Water Development Board so that the road is not broken by water. Now a new road design will be given. The project proposal will be sent to the road building again after preparing the estimate accordingly. From there it will go to the ministry.
